SITE OF MONTGOMERY'S TAVERN

original headquarters of William Lyon Mackenzie leader of the Upper Canadian Rebellion.

Scene of brief skirmish on 7th December, 1837, resulting in defeat of insurgents by loyal militia commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James FitzGibbon.

This uprising, an outcome of serious grievances against the dominant "Family Compact", was an important factor in bringing about the legislative union of Upper and Lower Canada, in 1841, and the permanent establishment in Canada of responsible government, a principle then first extended to a British colony.

Erected 1925 by Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. (at the southwest corner of Yonge St. and Montgomery Avenue, Toronto.)
